A landmark bill proposing the establishment of a Federal University of Technology in Badagry has successfully passed its third reading in the House of Representatives, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s educational development.
Key Development in Higher Education
The announcement was made on Saturday, May 10, with the bill now awaiting Senate concurrence. This initiative is expected to alleviate admission pressures on existing institutions while creating new educational opportunities for students in Badagry and surrounding regions.
Legislative Champion Behind the Initiative
The project is spearheaded by Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources and representative of Badagry Federal Constituency. Whingan expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their support, noting this development brings Badagry closer to realizing its long-standing educational aspirations.
Addressing Educational Challenges
During plenary on May 6, 2025, Rep. Julius Ihonvbere, the Majority Leader, presented the bill for its third reading. Hon. James Faleke emphasized the university’s potential to reduce the trend of Nigerian students seeking education abroad, particularly from the South-West region.
“This institution will provide crucial STEM-focused education and help retain talent within Nigeria,” Faleke stated, highlighting the university’s specialized focus on science and technology.
A Vision for the Future
Hon. Whingan reinforced the project’s significance: “With this development, we’re ensuring future generations can study, grow, and contribute to society right here at home.” The university represents a strategic investment in Nigeria’s human capital development and technological advancement.
