Finance Ministry Workers Protest, Shut Down Operations Over Unpaid Allowances

Abuja, Nigeria – Members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria have staged a massive protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, effectively shutting down operations at the government office.

Protest Disrupts Government Operations

Dressed in red T-shirts, the aggrieved workers barricaded the ministry’s entrance, preventing both pedestrian and vehicular movement in and out of the premises. The demonstration comes after months of failed negotiations between the union and ministry officials.

Union Leaders Speak Out

Patrick Solomon, Industrial Relations Officer of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority Branch, addressed journalists during the protest:

“We are here to protest the insensitivity to our requests and demands as a union and as members. We’ve exhausted all avenues for resolution, but there were no listening ears.”

Solomon highlighted several key grievances:

  • Withheld internally generated revenue (IGR) for over 15 months
  • Unpaid allowances affecting workers’ livelihoods
  • Failure of ministry leadership to address concerns despite repeated appeals

Ongoing Labor Dispute

The protest marks an escalation in the ongoing labor dispute, with workers claiming the ministry’s management has consistently ignored their demands. Solomon emphasized the financial hardship caused by the unpaid allowances, stating it has made operations “very difficult” for staff.
