The Federal Government has approved the release of N50 billion to settle outstanding earned allowances for academic and non-academic staff unions in federal universities across Nigeria.

Education Minister Dr. Maruf Alausa announced the disbursement on Wednesday, stating it fulfills President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to university workers. The announcement came through an official statement from the Federal Ministry of Education.

Commitment to Education Transformation

“This intervention reaffirms President Tinubu’s belief in Nigerian youth and the critical role of university staff in their development,” Alausa stated. “By prioritizing welfare, we’re building a foundation for globally competitive education.”

The minister praised university unions for maintaining industrial peace, noting Nigeria is currently experiencing one of its longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent years.

President Tinubu emphasized: “The youth are Nigeria’s heartbeat. Keeping our children in school isn’t negotiable. My administration is committed to making strikes in our institutions history.”

The payment addresses a longstanding grievance between university unions and previous administrations. Past disputes over unpaid allowances frequently led to prolonged strikes that disrupted academic calendars nationwide.

The government described the N50 billion release as part of broader efforts to transition Nigeria from a resource-based to knowledge-based economy through strategic education investments.
