CBN Launches NRBVN Platform to Boost $1 Billion Monthly Remittances
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in partnership with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), has officially launched the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) platform. This innovative solution aims to simplify financial access for Nigerians living abroad by enabling remote BVN registration without requiring physical presence in Nigeria.
A Major Leap for Financial Inclusion
Unveiled on Tuesday in Abuja, the NRBVN platform represents a significant milestone in the CBN’s financial inclusion strategy. The initiative seeks to better integrate the Nigerian diaspora into the country’s economic activities while improving access to essential banking services.
CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso emphasized the platform’s importance during the launch event: “For too long, many Nigerians abroad have faced difficulties accessing financial services at home due to physical verification requirements. The NRBVN changes that.”
The governor highlighted that the platform incorporates secure digital verification and robust Know Your Customer (KYC) processes to ensure both convenience and security for users worldwide.
Expected Impact on Remittance Flows
The NRBVN launch comes as Nigeria experiences growing remittance inflows, which increased from $3.3 billion in 2023 to $4.73 billion in 2024. The CBN has set an ambitious target of achieving $1 billion in monthly remittance flows through the new platform and complementary policy measures.
“We are optimistic about achieving our $1 billion monthly remittance target,” Cardoso stated, citing improved trust in formal channels and reduced transaction costs as key enablers.
Key Features of the NRBVN Platform
The NRBVN platform offers several innovative features designed to serve Nigerians in the diaspora:
- Remote BVN registration without physical presence in Nigeria
- Access to Non-Resident Ordinary Accounts (NROA) and Non-Resident Nigerian Investment Accounts (NRNIA)
- Investment opportunities in Nigeria’s capital markets with repatriation flexibility
- Robust security measures including AML and KYC compliance
NIBSS Managing Director Premier Oiwoh confirmed the platform’s adherence to international standards, ensuring transaction security and boosting global confidence in Nigeria’s financial system.
The CBN expects the NRBVN to significantly reduce remittance costs, which currently average over 7% in Sub-Saharan Africa, while creating new investment opportunities for diaspora Nigerians.
