PDP Excluded from 2027 Coalition Talks Against Tinubu, Says Babachir Lawal

Abuja – Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has revealed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is no longer part of coalition discussions aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
PDP Absent from Opposition Coalition Talks
In an exclusive interview with The Punch, Lawal disclosed that the PDP has never been considered in ongoing discussions among opposition groups.
“I can speak on behalf of Atiku. But every time we had discussions with members of other groups working toward a coalition, the name PDP never came up. Everybody we talk to about PDP, the answer we get is that it is an incurable virus.”
Options for Opposition Alliance
Lawal confirmed that opposition groups are considering two main options:
- Forming a brand new political party
- Joining an existing political party
While acknowledging Atiku Abubakar’s significance in the opposition movement, Lawal expressed uncertainty about whether the former vice president would bring the PDP into any potential coalition.
“Of course, Atiku is a whale in the PDP. I don’t know whether his plans would have been to bring the PDP into the merger. But you know the modalities we have been discussing are whether we could form a brand new political party.”
PDP’s Future in Doubt
The development comes as former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam recently warned that the PDP might collapse before the 2027 elections if its leadership fails to resolve internal crises.
No Need for Buhari’s Endorsement
Lawal also dismissed suggestions that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s endorsement would be necessary to challenge Tinubu in 2027, describing the current administration as “anti-poor” and calling for genuine opposition to mobilize against it.
