Bayelsa Governor Diri’s APC Defection Praised as Strategic Political Realignment

YENAGOA – Governor Douye Diri’s formal defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been hailed as a “wise and well-considered move” that positions Bayelsa State for greater federal integration and accelerated development, according to prominent political figures in the region.

Strategic Alignment with Federal Government

Dr. Waripamowei Dudafa, former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, described Governor Diri’s political shift as a pragmatic decision that aligns the oil-rich state with the central government’s development agenda. The defection marks a significant realignment in Nigeria’s Niger Delta political landscape.

“Governor Diri’s decision reflects his pragmatic leadership style which has always been guided by consultation, inclusiveness, and the pursuit of the common good,” stated Dr. Dudafa, who previously served in both the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and as commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Development.

Synergy Between State and Federal Agendas

The political veteran emphasized that the governor’s move creates strategic synergy between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” and Diri’s “Assured Prosperity” vision for Bayelsa State. This alignment is expected to facilitate increased federal presence and resource allocation to the region.

“Your decision to work in harmony with the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which is in synergy with your ‘Assured Prosperity’ vision will undoubtedly bring about the needed transformation and development for the people of Bayelsa State and the Niger Delta at large,” Dudafa affirmed.

Continuity in Governance Approach

Despite the party switch, Dr. Dudafa noted that Governor Diri’s administrative principles remain consistent. The governor’s approach has consistently emphasized wide consultation, public interest prioritization, and measurable development outcomes since assuming office.

Dudafa, who also previously served as Special Adviser on Youth Mobilization and Empowerment, praised the administration’s track record of “purposeful governance and tangible results,” reaffirming his continued support for the governor’s leadership.

Political Implications for Niger Delta

The defection represents more than a simple party change—it signals a potential shift in the political dynamics of Nigeria’s oil-producing region. By aligning with the ruling party at the federal level, Bayelsa stands to benefit from improved federal-state relations that could enhance infrastructure development and economic opportunities.

Dr. Dudafa promised continued solidarity with the governor’s administration, committing to “lend his support to ensure that he finishes strong” while acknowledging that “Governor Diri’s political maturity and developmental focus have repositioned Bayelsa for a brighter future.”
