Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Friday led a delegation of prominent political figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai and ex-Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, on a visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna.
Political Significance of the Visit
The visit comes barely a week after the Progressive Governors Forum of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Chairman Hope Uzodinma, met with Buhari to affirm the party’s strength and unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Atiku described the visit as “a courtesy and Sallah greetings visit” to the former president. When questioned about his diverse political company, the former vice president stated: “I have rights to be friends with anybody, whether political or non-political. They are all my friends.”
Opposition Unity Discussions
While addressing speculation about opposition alliances, Atiku clarified: “There is plan for the major political parties to come together and form a strong opposition, but it is not part of this visit.”
The delegation included several notable opposition figures:
- Senator Gabriel Suswam, former Benue State Governor
- Jibrilla Bindow, former Adamawa State Governor
- Achike Udenwa, former Imo State Governor
Atiku later shared details of the visit on his verified social media accounts, describing it as a “wonderful time” with the former president.
