Coalition Forms Amid Growing Dissatisfaction

Atiku made the announcement on Wednesday, May 14, during a meeting with stakeholders from Kogi East Senatorial District in Abuja. The former presidential candidate described the current administration as “incompetent and inefficient,” citing rising insecurity and economic challenges as key motivations for the opposition alliance.

“We have a coalition. All the major political parties are involved. In this coalition — the APC, PDP, Labour Party — all of us are involved. That is the way to go in confronting such an incompetent and inefficient government,” Atiku stated.

Defections Rock Political Landscape

The coalition announcement comes amid significant political defections:

  • Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai recently left APC for Social Democratic Party (SDP)
  • Ex-Minister Solomon Dalung also defected from APC citing poor governance
  • Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former VP candidate Ifeanyi Okowa switched to APC
  • Three Kebbi State senators defected from PDP to APC, reducing opposition numbers in Senate

Northern Political Dynamics in Focus

Political analysts are closely watching northern Nigeria’s political landscape following Atiku and El-Rufai’s recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari. The move has sparked speculation about potential northern support for the opposition coalition ahead of 2027.

Dare Glintstone Akinniyi, PDP National Youth Group spokesperson, suggested Buhari’s eventual endorsement could significantly influence the election outcome.
