Nigerian Army Clarifies Viral Video of Arrested Foreign Arms Dealer as Outdated

Military Denies Recent Connection to 2021 Zamfara Operation

The Nigerian Army has issued a formal statement disassociating itself from a circulating video that purports to show the recent arrest of foreign arms dealer Shehu Ali Kachalla in Zamfara State. Military authorities confirm the footage actually documents an operation conducted three years ago.

Historical Context of the Arrest

Acting Director of Army Public Relations Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele provided crucial details about the case:

“The individual featured, Shehu Ali Kachalla, a 30-year-old Nigerien national, was apprehended by the Zamfara State Police Command on 14 May 2021,” Anele clarified. The operation involved collaboration between the Federal Intelligence Bureau (FIB) and the Nigeria Police Force’s Special Tactical Squad (STS).

During interrogation, Kachalla reportedly confessed to supplying over 450 rifles and thousands of ammunition rounds to criminal networks operating across Zamfara, Kaduna, and Niger States.

Addressing Misinformation Concerns

The Army spokesperson expressed concern about the video’s resurgence on social media platforms. “This outdated footage is being shared to mislead the public and undermine our current counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations,” Anele stated.

She emphasized that while the 2021 investigation revealed possible collusion with security personnel, no Nigerian Army members were implicated or detained in connection with the case.

Military Professionalism and Public Advisory

The statement reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to professional conduct: “We maintain zero tolerance for misconduct. When verified, such cases involving our personnel face strict disciplinary action under the Armed Forces Act and military regulations.”

Anele urged citizens to disregard the recirculated video, describing it as both outdated and potentially harmful. She advised content creators and social media users to verify material authenticity and dates before sharing to prevent unnecessary public alarm.

Ongoing Security Commitments

The Nigerian Army reiterated its dedication to national security objectives: “We remain steadfast in our constitutional duty to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the statement concluded.

The military emphasized continued cooperation with other security agencies and local communities to combat terrorism, banditry, and related criminal activities threatening national stability.
