Former Ondo Deputy Governor Calls for Amotekun Law Amendment to Include Forest Guards
Proposal Aims to Tackle Rising Insecurity in Ondo State
Akure, Nigeria – Former Ondo State Deputy Governor Hon. Agboola Ajayi has called on the state House of Assembly to amend the Amotekun security law to incorporate Forest Guards into the agency’s structure. This proposed amendment seeks to address the growing insecurity in border communities and forested areas of the state.
Addressing Farmer Killings and Kidnappings
Ajayi made the recommendation during the 60th birthday celebration of former Minority Leader Hon. Rasheed Elegbeleye in Akure. He emphasized that the inclusion of Forest Guards would help reduce frequent attacks on farmers and improve security in rural areas.
“The insecurity rate is not acceptable to citizens of Ondo State,” Ajayi stated. “The primary objective of every government is to protect lives and property.”
Presidential Support for Security Initiative
The former deputy governor revealed that President Bola Tinubu supports the Forest Guards initiative as part of national efforts to combat insecurity. He stressed the need for proper legislation to equip these guards with necessary resources.
“I was particularly happy when I heard that the president spoke along those lines a few days ago,” Ajayi said. “There is a need for a law that will equip the Forest Guard with sophisticated weapons, with the approval of the National Security Adviser.”
Proposed Security Strategy
Ajayi proposed stationing the security outfit in forests alongside hunters and other security personnel to effectively combat criminal activities. The amendment would empower the state security network to mediate between farmers, herders, and other forest inhabitants.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The event was attended by prominent figures including:
- Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Olamide Oladiji
- Majority Leader, Hon. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi
- Former Deputy Speakers Ogundeji Iroju and Samuel Aderoboye
- House of Representatives member for Idanre/Eseodo, Festus Akingbaso
