Kano State Boosts Agriculture with Commissioning of Ajrena Foods Peanut Processing Facility

State Government Partners with UK-Funded Initiative to Launch Agro-Industrial Facility

Kano State has taken a significant step toward agricultural transformation with the official commissioning of Ajrena Foods Limited, a state-of-the-art peanut processing facility built to international standards. The project, supported by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) through Propcom+, promises to revolutionize the local agricultural value chain.

Catalyst for Economic Growth

During the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources Danjuma Mahmud (represented by SAPZ Coordinator Aminu Iliyasu) highlighted the facility’s potential to:

  • Create employment opportunities
  • Boost revenue generation
  • Enhance market access for local farmers
  • Attract further industrial investment

“This facility will play a pivotal role in transforming our agricultural sector through modern technology and innovation,” Iliyasu stated, urging stakeholders to maintain high production standards for global competitiveness.

Reviving Kano’s Agricultural Heritage

The Yusuf administration is implementing several strategic initiatives to revitalize Kano’s agricultural sector:

  1. Establishing an Agricultural Transformation Center in Dawanau for groundnut aggregation
  2. Developing an Agro-Industrial Hub in Bagauda for final processing of multiple crops
  3. Restoring Kano’s historic “groundnut pyramids” reputation

Empowering Local Farmers

According to Dr. Adiya Ode of Propcom Plus, the organization provided both financial and technical support to establish Ajrena Foods’ local supply chain. The company’s 2024 outgrower scheme has already:

  • Trained over 1,000 farmers (primarily women and youth)
  • Provided agricultural inputs
  • Implemented farm-to-factory traceability systems

Ajrena Foods Executive Director Ajay Ramnani revealed the facility will specialize in peanut cleaning and Nutzy-coated peanut snack production, combining traditional crops with modern processing techniques.

The event attracted dignitaries from various government and industrial sectors, marking a new chapter in Kano’s agro-industrial development.
