ADC Accuses Tinubu Administration of Plotting to Destabilize Opposition Coalition

Party Alleges Secret Meetings with State Chairmen to Undermine Opposition Unity

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a strong warning about what it describes as a “desperate and dangerous plot” by elements within President Bola Tinubu’s administration to undermine Nigeria’s growing opposition coalition.

In a statement released on Monday by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary and National Spokesperson, the ADC revealed that former state chairmen and key executive committee members from the North East and North West zones have been summoned to clandestine meetings with top federal government officials.

Allegations of Political Sabotage

“We have credible intelligence that the aim of this meeting is not for national security or peacebuilding,” the statement asserted. “It is to intimidate, coerce, and if possible, co-opt these individuals into a fabricated scheme against the opposition coalition. This is not politics. This is sabotage.”

The ADC claims the administration’s motive is clear: to create confusion within the party, delegitimize its new leadership, and derail its growing momentum as Nigeria’s emerging opposition force. The statement comes just weeks after the party’s high-profile July 1st Coalition Declaration and July 2nd unveiling events.

Warning Against One-Party State

The party framed these alleged actions as part of a broader threat to Nigeria’s democracy: “This surreptitious dalliance with ADC State Chairpersons by appointees of the federal government who should be focused on urgent national security priorities is a coordinated assault on multiparty democracy. This is how one-party states are born—through intimidation.”

The ADC suggested that the ruling party feels threatened by the opposition’s consolidation: “The July events have clearly rattled the ruling party. It is now obvious that the Tinubu administration—having lost the trust of the Nigerian people—cannot withstand the pressure of a united and credible opposition.”

Call to President Tinubu

In a direct appeal to the president, the statement continued: “We call on President Bola Tinubu to take note of these sinister moves by some of his appointees and call them to order. The president needs to prove to Nigerians that he is indeed a Democrat.”

The ADC drew historical parallels, reminding the administration of Nigeria’s democratic traditions: “He needs to remind his men that if the Goodluck Jonathan administration were as intolerant and as subversive of the opposition, the APC would not have come to power in 2015 and he would not have been President today.”

Commitment to Democratic Resistance

The party positioned itself as a bulwark against authoritarian tendencies: “The coalition movement is an idea whose time has come. This party belongs to every Nigerian who is tired of the lies, the manipulation, and the hardship. It belongs to every Nigerian who wants to restore decency, vision, and justice to governance.”

In a defiant conclusion, the ADC vowed: “We would therefore not allow a handful of desperate men to turn Nigeria into a one-party dictatorship. And it would be our patriotic duty to resist it with every democratic means available to us.”

This development marks a significant escalation in political tensions as Nigeria’s opposition seeks to consolidate against the ruling party. Political analysts will be watching closely to see how the administration responds to these serious allegations.
