2027: Only a Strong Northern Candidate Can Unseat Tinubu – Dele Momodu

PDP Chieftain Calls for Strategic Opposition Alliance

Former presidential candidate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Dele Momodu has emphasized that Nigeria’s opposition must field a popular northern candidate to successfully challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

The veteran journalist turned politician made these remarks during an appearance on Arise TV on Wednesday while analyzing current political developments.

Northern Marginalization as Political Opportunity

Momodu noted growing perceptions of northern marginalization under Tinubu’s administration, with allegations of southern favoritism creating discontent that could energize northern voters.

“The discontent could be crucial for the opposition,” Momodu stated. “To effectively challenge Tinubu, we need a strong northern candidate who can unite voters across the region.”

Strategic Importance of Northern Votes

The publisher-turned-politician highlighted the North’s decisive role in presidential elections, lamenting the decline of principled politics in favor of opportunism.

“Any Southerner thinking they can challenge Tinubu is likely wasting their time,” Momodu said. “The PDP or any coalition must understand these power dynamics. Success requires strategic thinking about regional representation.”

Call for Opposition Unity

Momodu suggested that influential northern figures like Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso could strengthen the opposition’s chances if they unite behind a single candidate.

He expressed concern about the PDP’s current divisions: “Half of PDP members are involved in coalition talks while others remain loyal. This creates confusion. If the party resists change, we might need to consider more drastic options.”

Warning for PDP’s Future

The political analyst issued a stark warning about the PDP’s potential decline: “Many historic parties have faded away. Unless the PDP undertakes significant reforms, it could follow the same path as the UPN or NPN.”

While defending former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s integrity, Momodu dismissed speculation about him joining the APC: “That claim is implausible. The APC itself faces serious internal challenges and lacks the discipline to address critical issues.”
