Bode George: Atiku Abubakar Cannot Be PDP’s Presidential Candidate in 2027

PDP Chieftain Cites Party’s Zoning Policy as Barrier

Chief Bode George, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Board of Trustees, has declared that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar cannot be the party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.

George made this revelation during an interview on Politics Today, a popular program on Channels Television, on Monday.

Internal Zoning Policy Violation

The PDP stalwart explained that the party’s internal zoning arrangement prohibits a northern candidate from emerging in 2027. According to George, the PDP’s rotational presidency policy mandates eight-year terms alternating between northern and southern candidates.

“Atiku can’t be the PDP presidential candidate in 2027. Our internal zoning policy makes it compulsory to be eight years for the South and North. If Atiku emerges as the PDP candidate in 2027 by any means, the party will collapse,” George stated emphatically.

PDP Governors Reject Atiku-Led Coalition

George’s comments come as the PDP Governors’ Forum rejected an opposition coalition spearheaded by Atiku ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 elections, lost to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Opposition Coalition Formation

In recent developments, Atiku has joined forces with former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai to form a coalition aimed at unseating President Tinubu in the next presidential election.
