President Tinubu Commissions 400-Tractor Mechanisation Centre in Katsina, Vows Food Sovereignty
Boosting Agricultural Productivity in Nigeria
In a significant move to enhance Nigeria’s agricultural sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially commissioned the Katsina State Agricultural Mechanisation Centre. The state-of-the-art facility features 400 brand-new tractors and modern farming equipment, marking a major step toward improving food security and rural economic development.
President Tinubu’s Vision for Food Security
During the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu emphasized the critical role of agricultural mechanization in addressing Nigeria’s food insecurity challenges. “This is not just about machines,” the President declared. “It’s about food security, economic empowerment, and the future of our youth. We must free ourselves from hunger and build a nation capable of feeding itself.”
The President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting Katsina State’s agricultural initiatives, assuring residents that Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s administration has the full backing of the federal authorities. “The Federal Government is standing with you, side by side,” he affirmed.
Modernizing Nigeria’s Agricultural Sector
Highlighting his administration’s broader agricultural strategy, Tinubu stressed that Nigeria must transition from subsistence farming to modern agricultural practices. The government is investing in mechanization, irrigation systems, and efficient water management to boost productivity.
In a key policy announcement, the President revealed that the Bank of Agriculture is undergoing restructuring and recapitalization to enhance financial support for farmers nationwide. “Nigeria must achieve food sovereignty, and we’re committed to making that a reality,” he stated.
Katsina State’s Agricultural Initiatives
Governor Radda outlined his administration’s five core development pillars: Agriculture, Infrastructure, Human Capital Development, Security, and Service Delivery. The new Agricultural Mechanisation Centre will serve all 34 local government areas in the state, improving access to modern farming equipment.
The Governor disclosed that his administration recently conducted a comprehensive survey of 411,000 farms, covering over 90% of agricultural land in Katsina. Additionally, the distribution of 400,000 bags of fertilizer for the 2025 wet farming season will begin shortly.
To support year-round farming, the state has distributed 6,000 solar-powered water pumps for irrigation and dry-season agriculture. Governor Radda also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the Federal Government’s support in enhancing regional security, including a N25 billion intervention for security operations.
This landmark project represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward agricultural self-sufficiency and economic diversification.
