Super Eagles Soar Past Gabon 4-1 in Thrilling World Cup Qualifier Playoff
By Obinna Uballa
The Nigerian national team delivered a stunning performance on Thursday night, overpowering Gabon 4-1 in a dramatic Africa World Cup qualifying playoff semi-final held in Morocco. This crucial victory keeps the Super Eagles’ hopes alive for a spot in the global tournament.
A Tense Start and a Decisive Breakthrough
The match began as a tense, tactical battle, with both sides creating but ultimately squandering chances. For much of the game, it seemed a single goal would decide the contest. The deadlock was finally broken in the 78th minute by Sevilla’s Akor Adams, who capitalized on a critical defensive mistake to put Nigeria in the driving seat.
Late Drama Forces Extra Time
Just as Nigerian fans began to celebrate, Gabon delivered a heartbreaking equalizer in the 89th minute. Mario Lemina’s hopeful strike took a massive deflection off defender Bright Osayi-Samuel, wrong-footing goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and sending the game into an additional 30 minutes.
Ejuke and Osimhen Seal Commanding Victory
Unshaken by the late setback, the Super Eagles regrouped and reclaimed control early in extra time. In the 98th minute, another Sevilla player, Chidera Ejuke, fired home to restore Nigeria’s lead. The spotlight then turned to Victor Osimhen. After a frustrating regular time where he missed several clear opportunities, the star striker roared back with authority, scoring two brilliant goals in the 102nd and 110th minutes to secure a resounding 4-1 win.
With this commanding performance, Nigeria advances to the Africa playoff final, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final clash between Cameroon and Congo.
