Southwest Governors Must Lead Nigeria’s Rebirth Through Regional Collaboration, Says Sanwo-Olu

In a powerful address that resonated through the political corridors of Nigeria’s southwestern region, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called for a renewed era of cooperation among southwestern states to spearhead national transformation. The Chairman of the South-West Governor’s Forum delivered his compelling message during the South-West Citizen-Government Engagement Summit in Akure, Ondo State, where political leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society representatives gathered to chart a new course for regional development.

A Call to Reclaim Regional Legacy

“We are gathered not merely to reflect on our journey but to reimagine our destiny,” Governor Sanwo-Olu declared, his words echoing the ambitious vision of the region’s historic leaders. “A South-West that once again sets the pace for Nigeria’s development and becomes the standard for others to emulate.”

The governor’s speech came at a critical juncture for Nigeria, as the nation navigates economic reforms and seeks sustainable development pathways. His message emphasized that the southwestern states—Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti—possess both the historical precedent and contemporary capacity to light Nigeria’s path forward.

The Institutional Framework for Progress

Central to Sanwo-Olu’s vision is the recently established South-West Development Commission (SWDC), championed by President Bola Tinubu and backed by the National Assembly. The governor described this commission as “a bold affirmation of our collective destiny” that provides the institutional platform needed to plan and execute regional transformation reminiscent of the old Western Region under Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“Let us rally around this new Commission, not in rhetoric but in action,” Sanwo-Olu urged, invoking the wisdom of the region’s legendary leader. “As the great sage, Obafemi Awolowo reminded us, ‘It is not life that matters, but the courage you bring into it.’ Now is the time to summon that courage once again.”

Blueprint for Regional Integration

The governor outlined a comprehensive strategy for southwestern collaboration that transcends traditional political boundaries. His proposal calls for deepened cooperation across states, sectors, and communities, leveraging what he described as the region’s inherent strengths: diversity as its strength and harmony as its advantage.

“We must institutionalize peer learning among our state governments,” Sanwo-Olu emphasized, “sharing insights, replicating success stories, and jointly pursuing regional infrastructure that binds us together rather than keeping us apart.”

This approach, he suggested, would enable the region to develop a shared agenda delivering inclusive growth for every citizen, regardless of their state of residence or socioeconomic status.

Economic Renaissance Under Tinubu’s Leadership

Governor Sanwo-Olu reserved significant praise for President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing Nigeria’s current trajectory under the administration as a transformation into “a land of renewed confidence, investment, and prosperity.”

“The results speak for themselves,” the governor asserted, pointing to “a more stable currency, a unified exchange rate, growing exports, surging revenues, and renewed investor optimism.” He characterized these developments not as abstract statistics but as “visible footprints of the Renewed Hope vision” that demonstrate what resolute leadership can achieve.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the initial challenges of the administration’s reforms but noted that “time has surely vindicated him and reaffirmed that Nigerians made the best and most beneficial electoral choice in 2023.”

Lagos as Regional Economic Engine

The Lagos governor highlighted his state’s strategic position to benefit from and contribute to Nigeria’s economic resurgence. With numerous investment-worthy initiatives spanning infrastructure, transportation, agriculture, digital and creative economy, blue economy, and tourism, Lagos stands poised to leverage the emerging macroeconomic stability.

“We are now more confident than ever that our landmark public-private partnership investment projects will attract more investors and partners,” Sanwo-Olu stated, specifically mentioning the Fourth Mainland Bridge, Lagos Green Line, and Lekki International Airport as transformative projects that would benefit from increased investor confidence.

The governor also emphasized Lagos’s advantage as home to three of Nigeria’s busiest ports, positioning the state to capitalize on Nigeria’s emergence as an export powerhouse. “Increased port activity will create more jobs and generate more revenues and taxes,” he projected, noting the cyclical benefits for the entire southwestern region.

Historical Continuity in Leadership Vision

Sanwo-Olu drew attention to the historical continuity between President Tinubu’s current national leadership and his earlier transformative governance of Lagos State a quarter-century ago. “Lagos State first benefited from the President’s foresight when he was Governor and is again benefiting from that remarkable foresight now that he is President,” he observed, suggesting a pattern of visionary leadership yielding long-term dividends.

The governor’s address repeatedly returned to the theme of the southwestern region reclaiming its historic role as Nigeria’s development pioneer—a land of firsts in education, broadcasting, urban planning, and governance. He challenged his audience with a rhetorical question that cut to the heart of his message: “Can we, once again, light the path for Nigeria’s rebirth?”

His answer was unequivocal: “I say yes, we can, because the spirit of innovation and unity that defined our past still lives in us. Let us not waste this season of extraordinary opportunity.”

The summit, themed “Strengthening Democracy Through Dialogue: Assessing Progress, Charting the Future,” brought together serving and former political leaders, traditional rulers, ethnic and religious leaders, civil society organizations, and youth representatives—a diverse coalition that Sanwo-Olu urged to work in harmony toward their shared regional agenda.

As the engagement concluded, the governor’s challenge hung in the air: Would the southwestern states rise to the occasion and indeed light the path for Nigeria’s rebirth? The answer, it seems, will be written in the coming months through the actions and collaborations that emerge from this clarion call for regional unity and national leadership.
