Brig. Gen. Tsiga’s Abduction Highlights Nigeria’s Deepening Security Crisis

Former NYSC Director’s Release Raises Questions About Government Strategy

The recent release of Brig. Gen. Maharazu Tsiga, former Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), after 56 days in captivity presents a critical opportunity for President Bola Tinubu to reassess Nigeria’s approach to its worsening security situation.

The alarming frequency of kidnappings across Nigeria has created a climate of fear and uncertainty among citizens. The abduction of a high-ranking military officer like Tsiga from his hometown in Katsina State on February 5, 2025, along with nine others (with one fatality), underscores the brazenness of criminal elements operating in the country.

The Ransom Dilemma and Security Concerns

While Tsiga’s release is cause for relief, reports suggest a community-driven WhatsApp campaign raised funds to meet the N400 million ransom demand. Though the Defence Headquarters denies any ransom payment, claiming both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies secured his freedom, past experiences cast doubt on such official statements.

This incident raises troubling questions:

  • How was Tsiga actually released if no ransom was paid?
  • Were any arrests made in connection with the kidnapping?
  • Do these criminal networks have sponsors, and who might they be?

APC Leader’s Tragic Fate Highlights Worsening Situation

The security crisis was further highlighted by the death of APC chieftain Rauf Adeniji in kidnappers’ custody. His cousin, rescued on April 7, revealed the grim details of their ordeal, including being chained for 32 days and witnessing his wife’s murder.

These cases demonstrate that no one – from military brass to political leaders – is safe from the kidnapping epidemic. The fundamental responsibility of government to protect lives and property appears increasingly compromised.

Call for Action

President Tinubu must prioritize:

  • Proper motivation and support for security forces
  • Depoliticizing security operations
  • Directing FCT Minister Wike to focus on Abuja’s security

If a general can be abducted with impunity, ordinary Nigerians face even greater peril without the resources to pay exorbitant ransoms.

Senator Natasha’s Recall Controversy: A Test for Democracy

In a related development, the attempted recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raises concerns about political interference in democratic processes. The Kogi Central senator’s popularity, demonstrated by her victory against establishment candidates, appears to have made her a target.

Key issues in this case include:

  • Alleged misuse of power against opposition figures
  • Questions about INEC’s impartiality
  • The need to protect women’s political participation

As Nigeria faces these twin challenges of security breakdown and democratic backsliding, leadership at all levels must rise to the occasion before the situation deteriorates further.
