PDP Governors Rule Out 2027 Merger or Coalition with Other Parties

Opposition Party Stands Firm on Independent Path

Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have firmly dismissed any possibility of forming a merger or coalition with other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The position was made clear in a communique issued after the PDP Governors’ Forum meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State on Monday.

PDP Open to Individual Collaborations

Forum Chairman and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who read the communique, clarified that while the PDP remains Nigeria’s major opposition party, it is open to welcoming individuals, parties, and groups committed to rescuing Nigeria and promoting good governance.

“The PDP, as a major opposition party, welcomes any party, persons or groups that are willing to join with a view to wrestling power and enthroning good leadership in 2027,” the communique stated.

Security Concerns and Constitutional Matters

The forum expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s escalating security crisis, citing recent attacks in several states. They also addressed constitutional matters, including:

  • Recommending the Deputy Secretary act as National Secretary pending INEC’s ratification
  • Seeking Supreme Court clarification on State of Emergency provisions
  • Reaffirming solidarity with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara

The governors emphasized their “collective determination to avert a rape of our constitutional democracy” through proper legal channels.
