Nation’s Top Athletes Converge for Gateway Games 2024
With just hours remaining before the opening ceremony, athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have gathered in Abeokuta for the 22nd National Sports Festival. The Gateway Games, running from May 16 to 31, promises to be a spectacular celebration of sportsmanship, culture, and national unity.
Delta State Aims to Extend Dominance
All eyes are on defending champions Delta State as they seek to continue their remarkable winning streak. Having topped the medals table in eight of the last ten editions—including consecutive victories in 2012, 2018, 2021, and 2022—Delta has established itself as the team to beat.
In the 2022 Asaba edition, Delta claimed an impressive 320 gold medals, 200 silver, and 128 bronze. “We’re confident in our team’s abilities and looking to continue our dominance,” a Delta State official declared.
Record-Breaking Performances from Previous Editions
The 2022 festival saw numerous records shattered across various sports:
- Swimming: Bayelsa State’s women’s 4x200m freestyle team broke national and festival records with 9:28:30
- Athletics: Chukwuebuka Enekwechi shattered a 36-year-old national hammer throw record
- Cycling: Delta’s Ese Ukpeseraye made history with eight gold medals
- International Recognition: American coaches attended for the first time to scout talent
Ogun State’s Extensive Preparations
Host state Ogun has made significant investments in infrastructure, security, and tourism for the event. Governor Dapo Abiodun stated: “We developed infrastructures, improved massively on security… we believe in sports’ power to unify and inspire.”
The state has enlisted sporting legends including Segun Odegbami, Tobi Amusan, and Anthony Joshua to inspire participants.
Economic Impact and Fan Experience
The festival is expected to significantly boost Ogun State’s economy through:
- Increased hospitality and transportation demand
- Retail opportunities for formal and informal businesses
- Enhanced tourism visibility
Attendees can expect dedicated fan zones, live entertainment, digital information access, and robust security measures.
The Big Question: Can Delta Be Dethroned?
As Nigeria anticipates the opening ceremony, the central question remains: Will Delta State maintain its supremacy, or will host state Ogun or another contender rise to the challenge? The next two weeks will reveal all.
