NSCDC Arrests 16 Vandals and Illegal Miners in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has made significant progress in its fight against criminal activities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), arresting 16 suspects involved in vandalism and illegal mining operations.

Details of the Arrests

According to Monica Ojobi, the NSCDC FCT Command spokesperson, all apprehended suspects were male. The arrests occurred during separate operations targeting different criminal activities across the territory.

Vandalism Crackdown

Ten of the suspects were caught in the act at midnight while attempting to vandalize and steal Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI). These vital public assets are essential for maintaining services and quality of life for FCT residents.

Illegal Mining Operation

The remaining six suspects were apprehended for engaging in unauthorized mining activities and illegal sand dredging in the Kukwaba area of Idu district. Such operations can cause significant environmental damage and pose safety risks to communities.

Recovered Items

The security operation yielded substantial evidence, including:

  • Armored and electrical cables
  • Air conditioning units
  • Sound speakers
  • Chairs
  • Transformer fuses

Official Statement from NSCDC

FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu reiterated the Corps’ zero-tolerance policy toward vandalism and illegal activities. He emphasized that public assets serve critical functions beyond aesthetics, significantly impacting residents’ quality of life.

“These assets are not just for show,” Commandant Odumosu stated. “They are purchased with public funds to make life better for our citizens, and their protection remains our top priority.”

Warning to Criminals

The Commandant issued a stern warning to criminal elements operating in the territory, stating that sabotage of government efforts would not be tolerated. He vowed that offenders would face the full consequences of the law without exception.

“Disobedience to the law, particularly theft and vandalism of critical infrastructure, will be met with the strictest enforcement measures,” Odumosu emphasized.

Call for Public Cooperation

The NSCDC leadership encouraged FCT residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and relevant information about suspicious activities. Such community cooperation is essential for maintaining safety and preventing criminal operations across the capital territory.

This recent operation demonstrates the NSCDC’s commitment to protecting national assets and maintaining law and order in Nigeria’s capital. The arrests serve as a warning to would-be offenders while reassuring citizens of ongoing efforts to safeguard public property and resources.
