The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong advisory to workers across the country, urging them to take proactive steps in planning for their retirement rather than relying solely on government support. This call comes amid growing concerns about the welfare of retirees in Nigeria.

Workers Encouraged to Take Responsibility

During a recent address, NLC representatives emphasized the importance of personal retirement planning, highlighting the current challenges faced by many retirees. The labor union expressed deep concern about the hardships experienced by retired workers who failed to make adequate preparations during their active service years.

While acknowledging the government’s pledge to improve retirees’ welfare, the NLC stressed that workers should view government support as supplementary rather than primary when planning for their post-service years.

The labor organization recommended that workers explore various retirement savings options and investment opportunities to secure their financial future, regardless of government pension schemes.
