Coalition Ahead of 2027 Elections Not a Threat to PDP, Says Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde

Ibadan, Nigeria – Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has dismissed concerns over political coalitions forming ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that they pose no significant threat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The governor made the remarks following a South-West PDP caucus meeting held in Ibadan on Friday.

Makinde Questions Coalition Credibility

Governor Makinde challenged the credibility of politicians forming alliances, questioning their political track records. “Who are these people in this coalition? They have been in some political parties before,” he said. “What are their antecedents? Does it mean that every time they move from one party to another, they have repented, changed, or have something new to offer the people?”

Drawing an analogy, he emphasized the importance of fixing internal party issues rather than abandoning the PDP. “If the roof of this PDP building here is leaking, as leaders of the party, are we going to abandon the building and go elsewhere to take refuge? We will stay inside here, fix it, and let the people know that we are responsible leaders.”

PDP Demands Release of Osun LG Allocations

In a communique issued after the meeting, the South-West PDP, through its Publicity Secretary Chief Sanya Atofarati, condemned the withholding of local government allocations in Osun State by the Federal Government. The party described the action as “unconstitutional, unwarranted, and a violation of the rights and wellbeing of the people of Osun.”

Call for Party Unity and Focus

The PDP leadership urged members to remain united and steadfast, supporting zonal leaders in navigating political challenges. The communique reaffirmed that the South-West PDP remains intact and called on all party organs to stay focused ahead of the upcoming national convention.

The caucus also commended Governor Makinde, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and other party leaders for their efforts in maintaining stability and fostering growth within the party.

Looking Ahead to 2027

With political realignments already taking shape ahead of the 2027 elections, Governor Makinde’s remarks signal confidence in the PDP’s ability to retain its stronghold in the South-West. The party’s emphasis on internal cohesion and governance issues suggests a strategy focused on grassroots engagement and institutional reforms.

As Nigeria’s political landscape evolves, the PDP appears determined to position itself as a viable alternative by addressing governance concerns and maintaining party discipline.
