A Dismissal Rooted in Social Media Posts
The dispute originated in late 2023 when El Ghazi made public statements on social media concerning the Israel-Gaza conflict. Mainz 05 initially responded in October 2023 by suspending the player, labeling his pro-Palestinian post as “unacceptable.”
In a brief reversal, the club reinstated him shortly after, stating that El Ghazi had shown “remorse” for his comments and had been issued a formal warning. However, this reconciliation was short-lived.
The situation escalated when El Ghazi subsequently clarified his position, asserting that he did not “regret” or “distance himself” from his original statements. This defiance prompted Mainz to terminate his contract outright on November 3, 2023.
The Court’s Ruling and a Costly Appeal
In July 2024, the Mainz Labour Court delivered a decisive verdict, ruling the dismissal unlawful. The court ordered the club to compensate El Ghazi with €1.5 million, equivalent to the wages he would have earned from the date of his termination until July 2024.
Mainz 05’s decision to challenge this ruling has now backfired. With their appeal rejected, the club has exhausted its legal options and must comply with the financial judgment.
