Lagos, Ogun Residents Brace for 25 Days of Daily Power Outages

Lagos, Nigeria – Millions of residents across Lagos State and parts of Ogun State are preparing for significant disruptions to their electricity supply as power distribution companies announce a 25-day maintenance schedule beginning Monday, July 28, 2025.

Maintenance Work Triggers Extended Power Disruptions

The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) has confirmed that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) will conduct critical infrastructure upgrades, resulting in daily nine-hour power outages from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM throughout the affected period.

ANED Chief Executive Officer Sunday Oduntan explained during a television interview that the maintenance work would impact all of Lagos and key areas in Ogun State including Sagamu, Ogijo, and Abeokuta.

Technical Details of the Power Upgrade

The TCN received approval from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO) for the installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fiber cable on the Omotosho/Ikeja West 330kV transmission line. This critical infrastructure project aims to enhance grid monitoring capabilities.

“The upgrade will enable full operationalization of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system,” a TCN statement noted. “This will significantly improve real-time monitoring and management of Nigeria’s power grid.”

Distribution Companies Issue Public Notices

Major electricity distributors have begun alerting customers about the impending disruptions:

Ikeja Electric’s Statement

“Customers may experience intermittent power supply and load shedding across our network due to the planned TCN outage. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause,” the company stated in its public notice.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company’s Advisory

EKEDC confirmed the maintenance would affect its entire network coverage area, emphasizing the work was necessary to ensure safe upgrades to the power infrastructure.

Safety Measures and Expected Outcomes

Oduntan clarified that complete system shutdowns would occur during the maintenance window for safety reasons. However, the TCN assured that power would be restored each evening after daily work concludes, with alternative circuits remaining operational to minimize disruptions.

“We understand the inconvenience this causes,” Oduntan acknowledged, “but these upgrades are essential for improving our power infrastructure. We assure customers that normal service will resume as scheduled by August 21.”

Preparing for the Power Outages

The extended outages present significant challenges for businesses, healthcare facilities, and households across the affected regions. Energy experts recommend:

  • Backup power solutions for critical operations
  • Adjusting business hours where possible
  • Conserving energy during peak outage periods
  • Monitoring official updates from distribution companies

This infrastructure project represents part of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its power transmission network and improve electricity reliability nationwide. While the temporary disruptions may cause hardship, authorities emphasize the long-term benefits of the upgraded system.

For more details on the power outage schedule and affected areas, residents are advised to contact their local electricity distribution companies or visit official government energy portals.
