Key Party Figure Departs Amid Unresolved Crisis

The Labour Party faced another significant setback on Thursday as Callistus Okafor, one of its factional national chairmen, announced his departure from the party. Okafor cited unresolved leadership disputes and disappointment with the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as primary reasons for his exit.

Leadership Crisis Comes to a Head

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the prominent party chieftain revealed his decision followed extensive deliberations by his faction’s National Working Committee and National Executive Council. Okafor placed particular blame on Obi for failing to resolve the party’s prolonged leadership crisis, which has persisted for seven years.

“My team and I had carefully looked at what is happening in the Labour Party, including the crises that have been going on for seven years, and wondered how long it will continue,” Okafor stated during the press conference.

Questions Raised About Presidential Candidate

The departing chairman expressed strong criticism of Obi’s leadership capabilities, suggesting his inaction within the party raised serious concerns about his potential to govern Nigeria effectively.

“When His Excellency Peter Obi joined us in 2022, what did he do? He supported Abure, who has become his archenemy today,” Okafor remarked, highlighting what he views as inconsistent leadership decisions.

Formal Announcement of New Direction

Okafor made his position clear: “I hereby stand today to announce to Nigerians and all the Labour Party faithful who are under my own faction that we are pulling out today as a team. We are moving from the Labour Party to Team Wazobia Nigeria.”

He emphasized that the party’s internal conflicts had reached an untenable point, stating: “This crisis has come to a point where it’s no longer healthy in the Labour Party.”
