Kano Business Leaders Prepare for 2026 Tax Overhaul with FIRS Partnership

The Kano Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KACCIMA) is launching a comprehensive education campaign to prepare local businesses for Nigeria’s upcoming tax reforms, set to take effect in January 2026.

Proactive Approach to Policy Implementation

Ambassador Usman Darma, President of KACCIMA, announced the initiative during the opening ceremony of the 46th Kano International Trade Fair. The chamber is collaborating with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to organize town hall meetings and awareness campaigns specifically designed for Kano’s business community.

“KACCIMA is working closely with the Federal Inland Revenue Service to implement comprehensive awareness campaigns and town hall engagements for the Kano business community regarding the new Tax Reforms scheduled to begin in January 2026,” Darma stated in his address.

Bridging the Knowledge Gap for SMEs

The educational initiative reflects a strategic shift in how business organizations are approaching government policy changes. Rather than reacting to reforms after implementation, KACCIMA is positioning itself as a conduit for preemptive education.

Darma emphasized that the program aims to ensure small and medium enterprises (SMEs) “adapt to reforms from a position of knowledge rather than uncertainty.” This approach acknowledges the critical role SMEs play in Kano’s economy and the potential disruption tax changes could cause without proper preparation.

Economic Context and Leadership Perspectives

The announcement comes amid broader economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. While acknowledging that some policies “may initially appear challenging,” Darma expressed confidence that “with understanding and resilience, their long-term effects will be favorable for national stability, investment confidence, and SME growth.”

The chamber president also recognized Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf for his administration’s “commitment to security and the creation of an enabling environment,” noting these factors have been “instrumental to our successes” in maintaining Kano’s commercial vitality.

Strategic Positioning for Future Growth

The tax education initiative coincides with Kano’s major international trade event, highlighting the chamber’s dual focus on both immediate business opportunities and long-term regulatory preparedness. Darma framed the effort as part of a broader vision where “the future of Kano’s economy rests on innovation, strategic partnerships, and the strength of our SMEs.”

This proactive stance represents a maturing relationship between business organizations and regulatory bodies in Nigeria, moving from reactive criticism to collaborative implementation of government policies.
