Technical Glitches Affect Nearly 380,000 Candidates

Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), became emotional during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday as he apologized for technical errors that affected the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Oloyede revealed that mistakes by one of JAMB’s service providers led to distorted results for approximately 380,000 candidates across 157 examination centers in Lagos and Owerri.

Resit Examination Scheduled

JAMB has announced a resit for all affected candidates beginning Friday, May 16. The board stated that candidates would be notified through SMS, email, and phone calls to reprint their examination slips.

The registrar, visibly struggling to maintain composure, acknowledged the damage to JAMB’s reputation despite implementing rigorous quality assurance measures before the examination.

Public Reaction and Examination Performance

The 2025 UTME results, released on May 9, showed that more than 78% of candidates scored below 200 out of the maximum 400 points. This performance sparked protests questioning the examination’s integrity.

Oloyede concluded with a philosophical reflection: “We burn the midnight oil, but despite everything, an error happened. It is a classical manifestation of the axiom that man proposes, but God disposes.”
