JAMB to Reconduct UTME for 379,997 Candidates Affected by Technical Errors in 157 Centres
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to reconduct the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for candidates affected by technical glitches across 157 centres in Lagos State and parts of the South-East.
Re-examination Details
The rescheduled examination will commence on Friday, May 16, 2025, with affected candidates receiving notifications via text message. JAMB confirmed that students who sat for the UTME in any of the identified malfunctioning centres (out of 882 nationwide) will be contacted directly by the Board.
“We have decided that all candidates affected in the 157 centres will be contacted to retake their examinations starting from Friday, May 16, 2025,” JAMB stated in its announcement.
Notifications will be sent through multiple channels including SMS, email, direct phone calls, and candidates’ JAMB profiles. Affected students are advised to reprint their examination slips to confirm their new schedules.
Background of the Technical Issues
The decision follows reports confirming errors traced to “an omission in the examination items” across specific operational zones. Public outcry and concerns from candidates and parents prompted JAMB’s intervention.
The Lagos operational zone (including Lagos State and parts of the South-East) experienced the most significant impact:
- 65 centres in Lagos affected 206,610 candidates
- 92 centres in the Owerri zone impacted 173,387 candidates
Coordination with WAEC
JAMB has coordinated with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to prevent timetable conflicts with ongoing WASSCE examinations.
“While not oblivious of the fact that WAEC examinations are ongoing, we have contacted WAEC and in an unprecedented show of solidarity, the Council has graciously decided to accommodate us within the WAEC time-slot,” the Board explained.
Special arrangements have been made for candidates with scheduling conflicts, particularly for Agricultural Science exams on Friday. Most affected students have been rescheduled for Saturday examinations.
The Board reassured stakeholders that the curriculum alignment between UTME and WAEC examinations minimizes academic disruption, with only the UTME’s unique reading text carrying an additional 10 marks in the Use of English paper.
