Community Celebrates Historic Amendment to Oyo Council of Obas and Chiefs Law
Residents and indigenes of Igangan in Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State have expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde and the Oyo State House of Assembly for amending the Oyo Council of Obas and Chiefs Law. The amendment grants the Asigangan of Iganganland the Vice-Chairmanship of the State Traditional Council and permanent chairmanship status within the local government’s traditional council.
A Long-Awaited Recognition
The Igangan Community Development Association (ICDA), representing the town’s interests, described the amendment as correcting historical injustices. In a statement signed by President Joseph Ojewola and Secretary Isau Ayandele, the group emphasized that this development properly positions the Asigangan in the region’s historical hierarchy.
“This amendment addresses the agelong injustices by putting Asigangan in the right place of history,” Ojewola stated, noting that the change will enhance the effectiveness of the traditional council while promoting peace and stability across Ibarapa North and the entire state.
Promoting Peace and Development
The community leader explained that the new arrangement will foster tranquility and accelerate development in Igangan. He called on the state government and other traditional rulers in the area to remain vigilant against attempts by certain groups to disrupt the existing peaceful coexistence.
The statement read: “We view this development as part of the government’s efforts to reform traditional institutions and correct historical exclusions of important traditional rulers. The amendment will make the Council more effective and promote peace throughout Ibarapaland and Oyo State.”
Community Extends Appreciation
Ojewola assured that the Asigangan would use his elevated position to protect the interests of all communities under his jurisdiction while maintaining respect for other traditional rulers in the local government.
The community extended special appreciation to Speaker Rt. Hon. Debo Ogundoyin, members of the State Assembly, and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ademola Ojo, for their roles in making the amendment possible.
