Federal Government Inaugurates New Board for Galaxy Backbone to Drive Nigeria’s Digital Economy
The Federal Government has inaugurated a new Board of Directors for Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB), Nigeria’s leading ICT infrastructure provider, as part of a strategic push to accelerate the nation’s digital transformation.
Inauguration Ceremony and Leadership
The inauguration took place at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) in Abuja, presided over by Senator Dr. George Akume, who now serves as the Board Chairman. The event marks a crucial step in aligning GBB’s governance with Nigeria’s broader digital economy agenda.
Composition of the New Board
The newly constituted Board brings together industry experts and representatives from key national institutions:
- Senator Dr. George Akume (CON) – Chairman & Secretary to the Government of the Federation
- Professor Ibrahim A. Adeyanju – Managing Director/CEO, Galaxy Backbone
- Hon. Olusegun Olulade – Executive Director, Customer Centricity & Marketing
- Mr. Olumbe Akinkugbe – Executive Director, Digital Exploration & Technical Services
- Mr. Mohammed Sani Ibrahim – Executive Director, Finance & Corporate Services
- Mrs. Rabi’ah Adamu-Waziri – Non-Executive Director (PTDF Representative)
- Mrs. Oluwakemi Babalogbon – Non-Executive Director (MOFI Representative)
- Mr. Abdulqadir Abubakar Maje – Non-Executive Director (Jigawa State Representative)
- Mrs. Margaret Ene Ebute – Non-Executive Director (Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy)

Strategic Vision for Galaxy Backbone
Senator Akume emphasized the need to reposition GBB as an agile and impactful institution at the heart of Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure. He stated:
“Our collective objective is to transform Galaxy Backbone into a more agile, responsive, and impactful institution, one that serves as a driving force behind Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure and service delivery.”
He highlighted the importance of collaboration, transparency, and strategic alignment between the Board and Executive Management for long-term success.
Digital Transformation Strategy (2025–2028)
Despite operating without a Board for over a year, GBB successfully developed its Integrated Digital Transformation Strategy (IDTS) 2025–2028. Key pillars include:
- Modernizing national ICT infrastructure
- Creating inclusive digital ecosystems
- Leveraging AI and blockchain technologies
- Strengthening cybersecurity and data governance
- Diversifying revenue streams
This strategy aligns with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy’s priorities and supports President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Looking Ahead
Professor Ibrahim A. Adeyanju, GBB’s Managing Director/CEO appointed in February 2024, expressed enthusiasm about working with the new Board to drive national impact through digital innovation.
