National Agency Commits to Countering Misinformation About Repentant Insurgents

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has pledged its full support to Operation Safe Corridor (OSC), the Federal Government’s initiative focused on deradicalizing, rehabilitating, and reintegrating repentant insurgents.

This commitment came during a courtesy visit by OSC Coordinator Yusuf Ali and his team to NOA’s headquarters in Abuja.

Changing Perspectives on Rehabilitation

NOA Director-General Lanre Issa-Onilu acknowledged widespread misinformation about the OSC program, admitting he previously had reservations due to limited understanding. In a statement on the agency’s official platform, Issa-Onilu now recognizes the initiative’s critical objectives and logical approach to national security.

“The program is essential for national peace and security,” Issa-Onilu stated. “Many beneficiaries weren’t ideological extremists but victims of abduction, coercion, or manipulation during insurgent occupation in the Northeast.”

Challenges of Reintegration

The NOA chief emphasized the importance of community-based reintegration, noting that without local and government support, many ex-insurgents remain isolated and vulnerable to re-radicalization. He praised military and security agencies for their efforts while calling for increased public education to counter negative narratives.

OSC Coordinator Yusuf Ali highlighted the program’s dual approach to insecurity: “We must address these challenges through both kinetic and non-kinetic methods,” he explained, expressing concern about stigmatization hindering national cohesion.

Ali revealed that the OSC program has operated successfully for nearly a decade with support from:
