Former NNPC Boss Mele Kyari Denies EFCC Arrest Rumors, Vows to Account for Stewardship

Kyari Labels Reports as “Clear Mischief,” Calls for Responsible Journalism

By Kolawole Ojebisi

Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has strongly denied circulating reports claiming his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a statement released Saturday night via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Kyari described the allegations as “clear mischief” and a “calculated attempt” to tarnish his reputation.

Kyari’s Firm Rebuttal

The former NNPC boss stated he is currently enjoying a “well-deserved rest” following the recent dissolution of the NNPCL board and management by President Bola Tinubu. He emphasized his readiness to account for his tenure if officially summoned by authorities.

“Over the past few days and in particular in the past two hours, I have been inundated with calls from concerned family and friends over claims by an online newspaper that I was in the custody of the EFCC,” Kyari wrote. “This is clear mischief and a calculated attempt by the newspaper and its sponsors to achieve a desired outcome, which only them know.”

Commitment to Transparency

Kyari maintained his record of service speaks for itself, declaring: “I must emphasize that I served with the fear of God knowing fully well as a Muslim that if I do not account before man, I will account before Allah… I am happy to account for my stewardship in this world.”

The former GCEO cautioned against the dangers of misinformation, noting that such reports could negatively impact Nigeria’s international reputation and investor confidence. “The resort to disinformation does not serve anyone’s purpose, the NNPCL or the country in general,” he warned.

Background of Leadership Changes

President Tinubu had in April removed Kyari alongside NNPCL chairman Pius Akinyelure from their positions. Bashir Ojulari was subsequently appointed as the new CEO, effective from April 2, 2025.

Kyari concluded his statement by thanking concerned friends and family while reaffirming his availability to respond to “all lawful queries” regarding his tenure at the national oil company.
