Delta Governor Oborevwori Clarifies Defection to APC, Says Move Aims to Boost State Development

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has explained that his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was motivated by strategic political alignment rather than an attempt to weaken the PDP.
Strategic Move for 2027 Elections
The governor, speaking through the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, emphasized that the decision was influenced by the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Our desire is not to kill the PDP but to move Delta forward, and so we changed our driving pattern,” Governor Oborevwori stated during a press briefing in Asaba. He added, “It was obvious that the PDP wouldn’t make headway in the forthcoming 2027 election, and so there was a need to move to the APC.”
Major Political Shift in Delta
The governor’s defection, alongside former PDP vice-presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa and other key party leaders, marks a significant realignment in Delta State’s political dynamics. Oborevwori stressed that the move was driven by a commitment to effective governance and securing a platform better suited to advancing the state’s development agenda.
Administration’s Achievements Highlighted
Commissioner Aniagwu highlighted the administration’s progress, particularly in infrastructure development, nearly two years into Oborevwori’s tenure. “We have provided roads in various communities, reducing travel time from Asaba to Ughelli to just one hour and forty-five minutes,” he noted.
Dismissing claims of instability, Aniagwu reaffirmed the government’s focus: “Anyone suggesting that the administration is losing grip is far from the truth. We remain committed to delivering results.”
