Dele Momodu Warns President Tinubu Against Turning Nigeria Into a Dictatorship

Former PDP presidential aspirant Dele Momodu has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against transforming Nigeria into a “democratic dictatorship.” The media mogul issued this warning during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program.

Defections Spark Democratic Concerns

Momodu’s comments came while discussing the recent defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy Monday Onyeme, and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Direct Appeal to President Tinubu

“My advice to him (Tinubu) is simple: uphold our democratic tenets,” Momodu stated. “Do not turn Nigeria into a democratic dictatorship. No matter what happens, you were a pro-democracy man before becoming president.”

The publisher emphasized the importance of democratic principles, adding: “Please, allow democracy to breathe in Nigeria. If you don’t, I can bet my life that later in life it will be deeply regrettable.”

Analysis of Political Defections

Regarding Okowa’s move to the APC, Momodu expressed little surprise, noting that the former governor had faced “serious harassment” recently. He questioned the sincerity behind such political crossovers.

“What would surprise me is if President Bola Tinubu truly believes people are joining the APC because they love him or because he is doing fantastically well,” Momodu remarked.

Warning About Political Trust

The veteran journalist advised President Tinubu to be wary of political opportunism: “My advice to Asiwaju is that he should not trust these politicians. Right now, everyone can see that he is determined to get a second term.”

Momodu concluded with a philosophical observation: “God gave him the first term, not through coercion. I don’t know why he now believes he must secure a second term through it.”
