Deadly Clash Erupts Over Contested Farmland
The tranquility of rural Yobe State was shattered late Friday night when a long-simmering farmland dispute turned deadly, claiming two lives and leaving two others seriously injured. The Yobe State Police Command has issued a stern warning against vigilante justice following the violent confrontation between residents of neighboring villages.
According to official police reports, the tragedy unfolded around 11:30 p.m. on August 9 along the contested boundary between Zango village in Gulani Local Government Area and Azare village in Gujba LGA. What began as a territorial disagreement over agricultural land escalated into a fatal attack that has left both communities reeling.
Victims Identified as Police Launch Manhunt
The attack claimed the lives of Sani Makeri, 40, and Abdullahi Maicitta, 35, both residents of Zango village. Two other individuals sustained severe injuries and were rushed to a specialist hospital in Damaturu for emergency treatment.
Police spokesperson SP Dungus Abdulkarim revealed that authorities sprang into action after receiving a distress call from the Village Head of Zango. “Our officers responded immediately to the scene, but the perpetrators had already fled,” Abdulkarim stated. “We have launched a comprehensive manhunt to bring those responsible to justice.”
A Dispute Years in the Making
Investigations indicate this violent outburst didn’t occur in isolation. The farmland conflict between these communities dates back to the previous farming season, with tensions steadily mounting despite intervention attempts by both law enforcement and the State Boundary Adjustment Committee.
“This was a preventable tragedy,” lamented SP Abdulkarim. “We had been actively mediating between these communities, but some individuals chose to take matters into their own hands with devastating consequences.”
Police Commissioner Issues Strong Warning
Yobe State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, psc, fdc, delivered an uncompromising message following the incident: “The Yobe State Police Command will not tolerate any form of lawlessness or extrajudicial retaliation. All individuals found culpable will face the full weight of the law.”
The Commissioner emphasized that such acts of vigilantism undermine the rule of law and threaten community stability. He urged residents to utilize established conflict resolution mechanisms rather than resorting to violence.
