Coalition Dismisses Corruption Allegations Against IGP Egbetokun as Baseless

Civil Society Groups Defend Police Chief Amid N234 Billion Misappropriation Claims

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Good Governance has strongly refuted recent allegations of financial misconduct against Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, describing the N234 billion contract award claims as unfounded and malicious.

Allegations Deemed Unsubstantiated

In a statement issued by Secretary General Comrade Olalekan Johnson, the coalition characterized the accusations as “baseless and clearly laced with ill-intent.” The group expressed particular concern about the timing and nature of the allegations, suggesting they may stem from internal sabotage within the police force.

“Our coalition is particularly disturbed that such serious accusations would be directed at the office of the Inspector-General of Police, an office currently occupied by a man of impeccable character, distinguished service, and a proven track record of professionalism,” the statement read.

Internal Sabotage Suspected

The coalition’s analysis suggests the allegations may originate from disgruntled police elements unhappy with Egbetokun’s four-year tenure confirmation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or officers facing imminent retirement.

“It is particularly disheartening that sensitive internal police information is being weaponized and leaked to the public in clear breach of service discipline and ethics,” the statement continued, condemning what it called a violation of police core values.

Budgetary Processes Defended

The coalition emphasized that police financial operations follow strict legal frameworks, including the Fiscal Responsibility Act and Procurement Act, with oversight from the National Assembly and other government agencies.

“Any suggestion that the IGP has unilateral control over police finances is a deliberate attempt to misinform the public and tarnish his reputation,” the group stated.

Calls for Internal Investigation

The coalition urged police leadership to investigate the leaks and hold responsible parties accountable, while warning Nigerians against what it described as an “orchestrated campaign” to undermine police reforms.

“We reaffirm our support for IGP Egbetokun and his vision for a professional, reformed police force committed to transparency and good governance,” the statement concluded.
