CAC’s AI-Powered Business Registration Portal Processes 11,000 Daily Transactions Despite Technical Hurdles
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has reported a significant milestone in its digital transformation journey, with its newly launched Artificial Intelligence (AI) business registration portal now handling over 11,000 transactions daily. While this represents a major leap forward in automation efficiency, the Commission acknowledges ongoing technical challenges that require resolution.
Revolutionizing Business Registration in Nigeria
Since its official launch on June 30, the AI-driven portal has transformed business registration processes in Nigeria. The system now issues registration certificates within an impressive 30-minute window once a director’s National Identification Number (NIN) is successfully verified. This marks a dramatic improvement from previous manual processing times.
The platform also introduces innovative features to support entrepreneurs, including the ability to test multiple business names without upfront payment. This functionality significantly reduces barriers to entry for new business owners exploring name availability.
“You can’t compare AI with humans for service delivery. We now handle over 11,000 cases daily,” the CAC stated. “Last Friday alone, we received 8,000 name reservation requests, all processed the same day. That would have taken two weeks manually. Automation through intelligence is necessary. It’s a change we must accept.”
Technical Challenges and System Dependencies
External System Failures Impact Performance
Despite these efficiency gains, the CAC has identified several technical hurdles affecting system performance. The primary issues stem from dependencies on external platforms:
- The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) portal has experienced prolonged downtime, preventing automatic NIN verification
- Intermittent outages at the REMITA payment gateway have disrupted fee collection processes
- Stamp duty remittances face interruptions when the ProTax platform experiences downtime
To address the payment processing challenges, the CAC has requested Treasury approval for an alternative payment channel that would maintain service continuity during REMITA disruptions.
Enhancing Security and User Support
Strengthening System Protections
The Commission has implemented robust security measures to protect user transactions, including one-time passwords (OTPs) for every filing. This additional layer of security helps prevent unauthorized access to sensitive business registration data.
Dedicated Support Infrastructure
A newly established help desk portal currently processes approximately 3,000 complaint emails daily, enabling the CAC to gather valuable user feedback and implement real-time improvements. The Commission is actively rolling out software patches to restore disrupted services, with full functionality expected in the near future.
Future Developments and Fee Adjustments
To fund ongoing system improvements, the CAC announced a fee adjustment scheduled to take effect on August 1. The Commission remains committed to resolving all technical issues promptly, ensuring the AI portal delivers on its promise of faster, more secure, and cost-effective registration services for Nigerian businesses.
The CAC’s digital transformation initiative represents a significant step forward in Nigeria’s business registration landscape, despite the current technical challenges. As the system continues to evolve, it promises to dramatically improve the ease of doing business in Africa’s largest economy.
