PDP Chieftain Urges Atiku to Focus on Party Strengthening

Segun Sowunmi, former spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign and a prominent PDP figure, has issued a strong warning to the former Vice President regarding his recent push for an opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Despite his long-standing loyalty to Atiku, Sowunmi took a firm stance against the coalition strategy, arguing it could undermine the Peoples Democratic Party’s foundation.

Concerns Over Party Stability

Sowunmi expressed deep concerns that abandoning the PDP’s established platform in favor of alliances with smaller political groups might further destabilize the party. He emphasized that the energy being invested in coalition talks would be better directed toward resolving internal party challenges and rebuilding the PDP from within.

The PDP chieftain also questioned the motives of those rallying around Atiku for the proposed coalition, suggesting many might not genuinely share his vision and could threaten party unity. During a press briefing on Thursday, Sowunmi stated:

“You were given presidential ticket to PDP twice. You were made vice president of PDP twice. Come what may, whatever come back together, amalgamation or coalition that you’re doing, it has to be done in the PDP.”

Call for Loyalty and Unity

Sowunmi appealed for renewed loyalty to the PDP, stressing that no leader should abandon the platform that elevated them to national prominence. He specifically called on Peter Obi to return to the PDP, arguing that his re-entry would significantly strengthen the party’s position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former campaign spokesperson’s remarks highlight growing tensions within the PDP as it strategizes for future elections while maintaining its identity as Nigeria’s main opposition party.
