Police Sergeant Killed in Armed Robbery Attack on Chinese Expatriate’s Convoy in Edo

Benin City, Edo State – A police sergeant identified as Aminu Yusuf was fatally shot by suspected armed robbers during an attack on a convoy transporting a Chinese expatriate from a bank in Benin City on Tuesday afternoon.

Details of the Attack

The incident occurred around 2:45 pm along First East Circular Road, shortly after the expatriate had withdrawn cash from a commercial bank on Sapele Road. Sergeant Yusuf, who was assigned to a private security detail as part of an official police assignment, was ambushed by four gunmen who trailed the convoy from the bank.

According to police sources, the assailants opened fire before the officer could react, killing him instantly. The robbers made off with his AK-47 rifle (bearing breech number BD 347851), 30 rounds of ammunition, and an undisclosed sum of money packed in a Ghana-Must-Go bag.

Well-Coordinated Operation

“The robbers attacked them while they were returning from the bank with cash running into millions,” a police insider confirmed. “It was a well-coordinated operation. They knew the route and timing of the escort movement.”

The slain officer was rushed to a specialist hospital in Benin City but was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains have been deposited at the mortuary pending further investigation.

Police Response

While the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, had not issued an official statement at the time of reporting, a senior officer confirmed that a manhunt had been launched.

“We are working with available intelligence to arrest those behind this brutal attack,” the officer stated. “This is a direct assault on the police. We will not rest until the culprits are brought to justice.”

Security Concerns in Edo

This incident highlights growing concerns about armed robbery operations targeting high-value cash movements in Edo State. Security analysts suggest that criminals may be monitoring bank transactions to plan such attacks.

The police have urged financial institutions and private companies to review their cash movement protocols and collaborate closely with security agencies to prevent similar incidents.
