Ahmed Musa Returns to Super Eagles Squad for Unity Cup Tournament

Veteran Striker Recalled After Year-Long Absence

Nigerian football captain Ahmed Musa has made a dramatic return to the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming Unity Cup Tournament in London. The Kano Pillars star, Nigeria’s all-time leading World Cup goalscorer, was named in coach Eric Chelle’s 25-man roster after missing national team action for over a year.

Mix of Experience and Fresh Talent

The squad announcement by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) features a blend of 10 home-based players and 15 foreign-based professionals. Musa’s return comes despite his absence during Nigeria’s impressive run to the AFCON 2023 final in Côte d’Ivoire.

Other notable inclusions include:

  • Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali
  • Midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka
  • Forwards Moses Simon and Kelechi Iheanacho

Tournament Details and Format

The four-nation Unity Cup will take place at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium (capacity 17,250) in West London. The schedule features:

Semi-Finals

May 27: Trinidad & Tobago vs Jamaica
May 28: Nigeria vs Ghana (renewing their 74-year rivalry)

Finals Day – May 31

Third-place playoff followed by championship match

Additional Friendly Against Russia

Coach Chelle has also selected a 21-man squad for Nigeria’s June 6 friendly against Russia at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. This roster includes captain William Ekong, defender Olaoluwa Aina, and forwards Victor Boniface and Sadiq Umar.
