Royal Endorsement for Upcoming African Athletics Championship

As anticipation builds for the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U18/U20 Championship in Abeokuta, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, has expressed strong confidence that the tournament will produce Africa’s next generation of athletics superstars.

The traditional ruler shared his optimism during a high-profile meeting on Tuesday with a delegation from the CAA and Nigeria’s National Sports Commission (NSC). The delegation was led by Director General Bukola Olopade, who also holds the traditional title of Osi Osoju Oba of Egbaland.

Royal Blessing for Sporting Excellence

“We are extremely proud that our son, Hon. Bukola Olopade, is leading sports development in Nigeria as Director General of Sports,” stated the Alake during the meeting at his palace in Ogun State’s capital.

The monarch continued: “Hosting this championship in Abeokuta fills us with great pride. I’m absolutely certain that many of the young talents competing here will soon become global athletics stars.”

Abeokuta’s Historical Significance

Beyond the sporting event, the Alake highlighted Abeokuta’s rich historical legacy, emphasizing the city’s longstanding global connections:

“Many visitors may not know that Abeokuta was the first town in West Africa to have a traditional ruler visit Europe in 1904. We signed a treaty of friendship with the British in 1893, and when they established colonial rule over Nigeria, Abeokuta maintained its independent status.”

Cultural Experience for Visitors

The monarch encouraged championship visitors to explore Abeokuta’s cultural treasures:

“Before leaving, I urge everyone to visit West Africa’s first Presidential Library – the Olusegun Obasanjo Library. Our local markets offer beautiful adire fabrics, which have become our cultural export to the world. Take home something that will remind you of Abeokuta.”

International Recognition

CAA President Hamad Malboum, leading the visiting delegation, expressed gratitude for the royal reception and acknowledged Nigeria’s swift action in hosting the championship after Algeria’s withdrawal.

Mr. Malboum praised Nigeria’s commitment to athletics development and recognized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support in facilitating the championship’s reorganization. The CAA delegation included the organization’s full executive board and prominent figures from the global athletics community.

Spotlight on Youth Development

The presence of these international sports leaders in Abeokuta underscores Nigeria’s pivotal role in African athletics and signals a renewed focus on youth sports development across the continent.

As the 16 July opening ceremony approaches, Abeokuta buzzes with excitement, blending cultural heritage with sporting ambition. The 3rd CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championship promises to be a landmark event for emerging African athletic talent.
