67 Children Die of Hunger as Israel’s Gaza Blockade Enters 103rd Day
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens with Over 650,000 Children at Risk of Severe Malnutrition
The Government Media Office in Gaza reported on Saturday that at least 67 children have died from hunger since October 2023 as Israel’s complete blockade of the territory reaches its 103rd consecutive day. Officials warn this tragic number could rise dramatically, with more than 650,000 children under five facing life-threatening malnutrition in coming weeks.
“Starvation Killing What Bombs Have Not”
“Starvation is now killing what bombs have not,” the Gaza media office stated, describing the ongoing siege as “one of the most extreme forms of collective punishment in modern history.” The office reported dozens of additional deaths recorded in just the past three days alone as Israeli forces continue blocking flour, infant formula, and critical medical supplies.
Accusing Israel of “deliberately pursuing a policy of mass starvation,” the statement revealed shocking statistics:
- 1.25 million people in Gaza currently experiencing catastrophic hunger
- 96% of the population (including over 1 million children) suffering acute food insecurity
- 650,000+ children under five at immediate risk of severe malnutrition
International Community Urged to Act
The media office placed full responsibility on Israel for what it called a “systematic and organized starvation campaign,” while also condemning international backers for their support or silence. “We are sounding the alarm: this is a mass death sentence unfolding before the eyes of the world,” officials warned. “Immediate international intervention is not optional, it’s a matter of life or death.”
UN Warns of Dire Health Consequences
Separately, UNRWA (the UN agency for refugees) issued its own warning about worsening health conditions in Gaza. “No soap, no clean water. Children in Gaza can’t be bathed properly because of the ongoing siege,” the agency stated, noting that overcrowded shelters combined with summer heat create conditions for disease outbreaks.
The agency demanded: “The siege must be lifted. UNRWA must be allowed to resume delivering humanitarian aid, including hygiene items, into Gaza.”
Background of the Conflict
Israel has continued its military offensive in Gaza despite international ceasefire calls, with the death toll now approaching 57,900 Palestinians – predominantly women and children. The sustained bombardment has:
- Destroyed critical infrastructure across the enclave
- Created severe food shortages
- Led to widespread disease outbreaks
In November 2023, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice regarding its military actions in Gaza.
