2027 Election: SDP’s Adewole Adebayo Considers Stepping Down for Peter Obi
Opposition Forces Align to Challenge Tinubu in 2027

ABUJA – In a significant political development ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in 2023, has hinted at potentially stepping down for Labour Party’s Peter Obi.
The revelation came during Adebayo’s appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ program on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, where he praised Obi’s political approach.
“I like what he (Obi) is doing. He is serious-minded. He is having meaningful discussion, quiet discussion, honourable discussion,” Adebayo stated.
When directly asked about the possibility of withdrawing his candidacy in favor of Obi, Adebayo responded:
“That will come later, but from what I see, I like what he’s doing.”
Opposition Coalition Takes Shape
The comments come as Nigeria’s opposition parties appear to be forming a united front against President Bola Tinubu’s potential reelection bid. Adebayo’s SDP, Obi’s Labour Party, and other opposition figures are reportedly engaged in strategic discussions to present a formidable challenge in 2027.
Peter Obi’s Vision for 2027
Peter Obi has recently clarified that his participation in opposition coalition talks isn’t about personal ambition but about addressing Nigeria’s pressing issues:
“I’m in coalition against hunger, a coalition against poverty, a coalition against ill health. Politics for me is not about positions, it is about doing the right thing.”

ADC Emerges as Potential Coalition Platform
Recent reports indicate that key opposition figures including Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai have adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their coalition platform. A high-level meeting on May 20 established committees to finalize the alliance’s structure.
This political realignment represents a critical juncture in Nigeria’s democratic journey, as opposition forces seek to present a unified alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election.
