Sultan of Sokoto Declares ‘Enough is Enough’ on Nigeria’s Insecurity Crisis
Traditional Rulers Take Stronger Stance Than Politicians
His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has asserted that traditional rulers are more concerned about Nigeria’s escalating security crisis than most politicians. The Sultan made this declaration during the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council 7th Executive Committee Meeting in Maiduguri.
United Front Against Violence
“We will speak with one voice to say ‘enough is enough’ of this senseless killing of innocent people across the North and across the country,” the Sultan stated. He emphasized that over 86 traditional rulers from Northern Nigeria convened to address security challenges through closed-door discussions.
Call for Concrete Action
The Sultan questioned the effectiveness of repeated condemnations: “How many times do we need to condemn these killings before our political leaders and security agencies take action?” He stressed the need for collaboration between traditional rulers and political leaders to combat insecurity.

Youth Empowerment as Solution
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum emphasized youth empowerment as critical to reducing radicalization: “Empowered youths are not only less vulnerable to crime or radicalization, they become active agents of development.” He highlighted agriculture as the North’s economic lifeline.
Security Agencies’ Commitment
Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, represented by AIG Kenechikwu Onwuemelie, advocated for a “whole-of-society approach” to security, pledging the police force’s full support in safeguarding Northern communities.
Borno’s Security Challenges
Governor Zulum warned that Borno risks returning to turmoil as Boko Haram regains strength, with three LGAs reportedly under insurgent control. The Shehu of Borno noted compromised security from disguised settlers.
Historical Context
This isn’t the first time traditional rulers have addressed Borno’s security. In December 2020, the Sultan and other rulers urged military action in Lake Chad and Sambisa Forest against Boko Haram.
