Security Forces Repel Major Bandit Attack in Kebbi Community
Joint Military Operation Thwarts Coordinated Assault in Ribah Town
Security forces in Nigeria have successfully defended Ribah town in Kebbi State against a large-scale bandit attack, demonstrating improved coordination between ground and air units in combating insecurity in the region.
According to official reports, troops from the 223 Light Battalion stationed in Zuru, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, engaged more than 400 heavily armed bandits who launched a coordinated assault on the community in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area.
Intense Firefight and Aerial Support
The Wednesday attack triggered a fierce gun battle between security forces and the assailants. Military sources confirmed that the engagement resulted in significant casualties among the attackers, with several bandits killed during the exchange.
“The Nigerian Air Force provided crucial aerial support during the operation,” a security source revealed. “A fighter jet targeted retreating bandits, inflicting additional casualties on the fleeing attackers.”
Security personnel recovered weapons abandoned at the scene, while some bandits reportedly managed to evacuate the bodies of their fallen comrades under cover of darkness.
Connection to Niger State Violence
Alhaji AbdulRahman Zagga, Director of Security at the Kebbi State Cabinet Office, confirmed the incident during a briefing in Birnin Kebbi. He suggested the attackers might be linked to recent violence in neighboring Niger State.
“These bandits appear to be the same group responsible for recent attacks in parts of Niger State before crossing into Kebbi,” Zagga stated. “Their movement patterns suggest they’re testing security responses across state boundaries.”
Restoration of Normalcy
Authorities confirmed that calm has returned to Ribah town following the successful defense operation. Security forces have maintained a visible presence in the area to prevent potential follow-up attacks and reassure the local population.
The Kebbi State government has commended the swift response of security forces, highlighting the importance of inter-service cooperation in addressing security challenges in Nigeria’s northwest region.
Ongoing Security Challenges
This incident underscores the persistent security threats facing communities in northwestern Nigeria, where bandit groups frequently launch attacks on rural settlements. The successful defense of Ribah town demonstrates improved military coordination, but analysts warn that comprehensive solutions must address the root causes of banditry in the region.
Local residents have expressed gratitude for the military’s intervention while calling for sustained security presence to prevent future attacks. Community leaders are working with security agencies to strengthen early warning systems and improve information sharing.
