Benue State Launches Quick Response Squad to Combat Rising Insecurity
A New Security Initiative for Grassroots Protection
In a significant move to address growing security challenges, the Benue State Government has officially launched a specialized Quick Response Squad (QRS). This innovative security outfit, composed of non-conventional forces, aims to provide rapid intervention against threats across all communities in the state.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the squad’s headquarters in Makurdi, was presided over by Deputy Governor Dr. Sam Ode, representing Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia. The event marks a crucial step in the administration’s comprehensive security strategy for Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.
Government’s Commitment to Security Reinforcement
Dr. Ode emphasized that the QRS formation demonstrates the state government’s unwavering dedication to protecting citizens across Benue’s 23 local government areas and 276 council wards. He highlighted that security has remained a top priority since Governor Alia assumed office, with previous initiatives including the distribution of operational vehicles and equipment to existing security agencies.
“This squad represents our administration’s proactive approach to combating insecurity,” stated Ode. “It functions as a specialized joint task force designed to support and complement conventional security operations throughout the state.”
Operational Structure and Community Integration
The QRS comprises personnel from multiple security organizations, including:
- Benue State Civil Protection Guards
- Vigilante Group of Nigeria
- Nigerian Forest and Security Services
- Civilian Joint Task Force
Hon. Joseph Har, Special Adviser on Internal Security and Deputy Protection General of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards, clarified that the QRS operates as a support system rather than a replacement for established security institutions.
“Our model has already attracted attention from other states,” Har noted. “With this launch, residents can feel safer knowing there’s an immediate response mechanism in place.”
Funding and Long-Term Sustainability
The deputy governor revealed plans to establish a Benue State Security Trust Fund, which will provide sustainable financing for the QRS and other security initiatives. This financial framework aims to ensure the squad’s continuous operation and effectiveness in combating crime.
Leadership and Operational Mandate
Retired Captain Ayuma Ajobi, appointed as State Commander of the QRS, outlined the squad’s strategic objectives:
- Serve as first responders to security incidents
- Establish presence across all council wards
- Expand operations to all 23 LGAs
Ajobi expressed gratitude for the governor’s support, acknowledging that both the Civil Protection Guards and QRS owe their existence to the administration’s security vision.
Inter-Agency Collaboration
Deputy Commandant Ota Williams of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) emphasized the importance of intelligence sharing between the QRS and conventional security agencies.
“Intelligence forms the foundation of effective security operations,” Williams stated. “The QRS’s community presence makes them invaluable partners in gathering and disseminating critical information.”
Community Engagement and Public Participation
Makurdi Local Government Chairman Hon. Joseph Keffi welcomed the initiative, pledging continuous support from local authorities. The event also saw the public unveiling of QRS emergency contact numbers:
Emergency Hotlines: 09011777702 and 09011777703
This move aims to foster direct communication between citizens and security responders, enhancing the state’s overall security architecture.
A Warning to Criminal Elements
Security officials issued a stern warning to cult groups and criminal networks operating in the state. Hon. Har challenged those engaged in unlawful activities to either join legitimate security services or face prosecution.
The QRS launch represents Benue State’s innovative approach to addressing Nigeria’s complex security challenges, combining grassroots intelligence with rapid response capabilities.
