The Governor of Akwa Ibom, Pastor Umo Eno, has called on contractors handling projects across the state to ensure effective use of the dry season to complete their jobs, emphasising that the region must become a construction site during this period.

Eno said this during a special meeting with 41 contractors in his office at Government House, Uyo on Wednesday.

The governor announced that funds had been released accordingly and that a monitoring team would visit various sites to assess the level of compliance and progress.

He noted that while the state was not discouraging anyone from celebrating Christmas, contractors must prioritise the season for productive work.

The governor advised the contractors to consider breaking into shifts and ensuring 24-hour construction activities, which, according to him, would enhance timely delivery.

“We convened this meeting because we understand our terrain in this part of Nigeria. Rains are always with us, and now it rains even till December. So we have a small window to get back to the site and complete the projects.

“We have awarded some new roads, and some payments are for additional works. I think there are about 41 projects, and 41 contractors are either mobilising to the site or continuing with their payments.

“Also, we are aware that it is Christmas season, but the funds we are releasing are for contractors who will remain on-site to work.

“We all know the festive mood during Christmas. Some contractors abandon sites, and by the time they return in January, the rainy season begins, and prices escalate. So, if you plan to go on vacation as a company, please do not take this money. Let us know if your company will shut down for the holidays,” he said.

The governor highlighted that the projects span all local government areas in the state and urged contractors to involve locals where necessary and fulfil their corporate social responsibilities.

He commended the contractors for being partners in the state’s development and assured them that the government was prepared to provide the necessary support for effective and timely project delivery.

In his remarks, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of Hensek Integrated Services, Engr. Uwem Okoko, who spoke on behalf of the contractors, thanked the governor for the opportunity to be development partners.

He appreciated the prompt release of funds and assured the governor that they would deliver on their commitments and meet expectations.
