Wukari Landowners Decry Non-Payment of Compensation, Cite Rising Hardship
Landowners in Wukari, Taraba State, whose properties were acquired for the establishment of the Federal University, Wukari, have raised serious concerns over the prolonged delay in compensation payments by the state government. They allege that the non-payment has plunged many into severe financial distress, with some students forced to abandon their education due to economic hardship.
Growing Frustration Among Affected Families
In a statement issued to journalists in Jalingo on Sunday, the aggrieved landowners, represented by their solicitor, Barrister P. M. Shagnah, expressed deep frustration over the government’s inaction. Despite multiple appeals to relevant authorities, no tangible steps have been taken to resolve the compensation issue, leaving many families in dire straits.
“Our clients have endured immense hardship due to this prolonged delay,” Barrister Shagnah stated. “Many are now facing hunger and poverty, while some students from the host community have had to drop out of school because their families can no longer afford tuition fees.”
Partial Compliance with Court Judgment
The landowners acknowledged that Governor Agbu Kefas had partially complied with a Taraba State High Court judgment by disbursing 50% of the compensation awarded. However, they stressed that the remaining balance must be paid without further delay to alleviate their suffering.
“While we appreciate the governor’s initial payment, the outstanding balance is critical to restoring normalcy in our lives,” the statement emphasized. “Further delays will only deepen the economic crisis in our community.”
Breach of Post-Judgment Agreement
Barrister Shagnah revealed that in 2023, a post-judgment agreement was reached between the landowners and the state government, stipulating that a total compensation of N205 million would be paid in seven installments from December 2023 to July 2024.
“Regrettably, we are now in July 2025, and approximately N80 million remains unpaid,” he said. “This breach of agreement has persisted for over a year, despite our clients’ willingness to accept a reduced amount for the sake of an expedited resolution.”
Potential Socio-Economic Consequences
The landowners warned that continued delays could exacerbate socio-economic challenges in Wukari, potentially fueling unrest among affected families. They urged the state government to act swiftly to prevent further deterioration of living conditions in the community.
“We implore Governor Kefas to honor the agreement and release the remaining compensation without delay,” the statement concluded. “This will not only alleviate suffering but also foster goodwill between the government and the people.”
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are calling for urgent intervention to address the grievances of the Wukari landowners and prevent further escalation of hardship in the region.
