President Tinubu Recognizes Diaspora as Fourth Pillar of Nigeria’s Growth Amid $20.93 Billion Remittance Boost
Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the critical role of Nigerians living abroad in accelerating national development, describing the Diaspora community as a cornerstone of his administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda. Speaking at the 2025 National Diaspora Day celebration in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the government’s commitment to deeper engagement with the estimated 20 million Nigerians overseas.
Diaspora Remittances Outpace Foreign Direct Investment
Through Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, President Tinubu highlighted the staggering $20.93 billion in official remittances recorded in 2024—more than four times Nigeria’s total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for the same period. The President praised the Diaspora as a “formidable force of innovation, resilience, and economic power” driving Nigeria’s growth.

The Fourth Pillar of National Development
“The Renewed Hope Foreign Policy recognizes the Diaspora as the fourth pillar of our national strategy—alongside Democracy, Demography, and Development,” Tinubu stated. The administration plans to address operational challenges facing the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) to fully harness the potential of global Nigerian expertise.
Senator Akume, who officially opened the event, explained this year’s theme—”Optimizing Formidable Diaspora Potentials for National Development and Growth”—reflects the government’s vision to leverage overseas talent for domestic prosperity. Key initiatives include:
- The National Diaspora Merit Award
- Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit
- Cultural revival through the Badagry Door of Return Festival
$99 Billion in Six Years: The Diaspora Economic Impact
NiDCOM Chairperson Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa revealed that Nigerians abroad have remitted over $99 billion to the national economy in the past six years. She described the Diaspora community as “barrier breakers and pacesetters” transforming Nigeria’s global image while contributing significantly to development.

Key NiDCOM programs include:
- Diaspora Mortgage Scheme: Enabling property investments from abroad
- Diaspora Investment Trust Fund: Channeling foreign capital into critical sectors
- Nigeria Diaspora Data Mapping Project: Creating a comprehensive database of skilled Nigerians worldwide
Dabiri-Erewa also proposed a Presidential Diaspora Fellowship Programme to facilitate short-term sabbaticals for professionals abroad to share expertise with domestic institutions.
International Recognition of Nigeria’s Diaspora Strategy
Global partners praised Nigeria’s approach to Diaspora engagement. Isabelle Wolfsgruber of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) commended NiDCOM’s work, particularly through the EU-funded FMM West Africa II project that institutionalizes diaspora participation in national planning.
Ms. Sharon Dimanche, Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Nigeria, emphasized that the value of Nigeria’s global citizens extends beyond financial remittances: “Nigerian professionals are transforming sectors worldwide while maintaining strong homeland connections.” She particularly highlighted opportunities in the youth-driven digital economy.
From Celebration to Implementation
As Nigeria marks the 7th National Diaspora Day, the 2025 event signals a shift from symbolic recognition to actionable policies. With remittances now a major economic pillar and new programs facilitating knowledge transfer, Tinubu’s administration appears determined to transform the global Nigerian experience into tangible local impact.
The government’s comprehensive Diaspora strategy—combining financial channels, cultural ties, and professional networks—positions Nigeria as a leader in harnessing transnational potential for national development.
